The ‘Sigma’ dress, by Papercut Patterns is one of my absolute favourite dressmaking patterns. The style is semi-fitted, with front and back darts, an invisible back zipper, and pockets. You can choose from a gathered or straight fitted skirt, and you can choose long or short sleeves. Fabric choices are extensive with the Sigma, which is designed for light to medium weight woven fabrics such as cotton, silk, linen, wool suiting, or even a dress-weight denim. Depending on your fabric selection, this could be a casual every-day dress, a work-day staple, or even a night out or Christmas Day dress!
This dressmaking course is aimed at intermediate sewists – you must have some sewing experience, dressmaking or otherwise, and feel confident using a sewing machine. Some aspects of this project may be challenging, but you will learn a huge amount of skills which will give you a great deal of confidence with future dressmaking.
We will begin the course by taking measurements to check which size you need to make, learning to grade between sizes if necessary. You will then cut the pattern and make a ‘toile’ or ‘muslin’, which you will use to check the fit and make alterations where necessary.
Finally, you will make a well-fitting dress to be proud of! The pattern sheet, instructions, and calico fabric for your toile will all be provided within the course fee.
