Free motion sewing, often called free motion embroidery or applique, is a wonderful and endlessly creative way to make unique images by ‘drawing’ on your fabric.
Come along to this introductory workshop and learn how to set up your machine for this process, and begin designing! You can ‘play’ with ideas and scraps, or you can have an aim in mind. You can ‘draw’ a design just with threads, or you can applique patches of fabric to create an image. The photos below are from a previous workshop where my student, Sophie, re-created in fabric and stitch, a lovely drawing done by her daughter!
I will provide plain calico and denim as ‘ground’ fabrics, and you’re welcome to raid my fabric scraps and threads. However, if you are particular about the design you want to work on you may wish to bring a few supplies of your own.
But don’t worry! You don’t need to create a masterpiece if you don’t want to. Just come along and have some fun. Below are some of my own pieces. The one which says ‘Stitches’ is in fact an iron-on badge made using a double-sided adhesive sheet. How about making a patch for a denim jacket or kid’s rucksack?!
You are welcome to borrow a machine. If you would prefer to use your own you will need a ‘free motion’ or ‘open-toe’ foot which is compatible with your machine. If you need advice on anything just email!
