Friday 1st February: 10-1
This is the one for you if you’ve never sewn before, or would like to refresh your skills after years away from a sewing machine.
A relaxed introductory sewing session where you will learn how to use a sewing machine, including winding the bobbin; threading; adjusting tension; changing needles and sewing a straight seam. Simple calico will be provided for trying out stitches.
You will then get stuck in to sewing your first project! You can make either a simple ‘envelope’ backed cushion, or a basic ‘book-bag’ style tote. Bag straps will be provided for the latter.
You will need to bring some fabric to make your item, but please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need advice on where to shop, or what to buy.
Tote bag: You will need half a metre of fabric for the outside of your bag. I will provide plain calico for the lining, but if you’d like something more interesting please bring another half metre for the lining. You can learn to make straps, or use webbing handles available here.
Cushion with an ‘envelope’ back: You will need half a metre of fabric, ideally at least 140cms wide. Some fabrics you will come across are only 114cms wide – this will just about work as long as the design is not ‘directional’. If in doubt, just ask! A cushion works best with something that isn’t too lightweight. This will cover a 40cm cushion pad which you will need to provide yourself. If you’d like to cover a larger cushion please ask for advice on fabric quantities.
You may bring your own sewing machine if you would like to learn to use it, or you can use one of the machines available here. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to borrow a machine, or with any queries.
